Why Electrician Invoices Need Extra Care

Electrical work comes with a compliance layer that most other trades do not have. Certificates, inspection reports, NEN 1010 compliance declarations - these all tie back to your invoice as the commercial record of what was done. If your invoice description does not match your certificate, you have a problem.

Beyond compliance, electrical work often involves a mix of high-value materials (consumer units, EV chargers, solar components) and labour, at different BTW rates. Getting this right on your electrician invoice is both a legal requirement and a practical way to avoid client disputes.

Dutch BTW Rates for Electrical Work

This is where many electricians make expensive mistakes:

Labour on renovation work (bestaande woningen, older than 2 years): 9% BTW applies to labour for renovation work on existing owner-occupied homes. This includes rewiring, adding circuits, fitting consumer units in existing homes.

Labour on new-build or commercial work: 21% BTW.

Materials: Always 21% BTW, regardless of the type of project.

EV charging installations: The reduced 9% rate on labour can apply if the charger is being installed in an existing private home. In commercial settings, it is 21%.

Solar panel installations (zonnepanelen): Since 2023, the BTW rate on solar panels supplied and installed on or near a residential home is 0%. This is a significant saving you can pass on to clients and a strong selling point.

The correct way to show this on your electrician invoice template is to list labour and materials as separate line items with their respective BTW rates. Do not blend them into a single total.

Writing Clear Job Descriptions

Electrical job descriptions need to be precise because they link to your safety certification. Compare:

Too vague:

Electrical work, 2 days - €840 + BTW

Correct:

Partial rewiring, first floor: replacement of ring main circuit serving 6 double sockets, installation of new 32A MCB in existing consumer unit (Hager). New cable in conduit, all connections made to BS 7671 / NEN 1010 standard. Test certificate issued. Labour (14 hrs): €560. Materials (2.5mm² T&E cable, conduit, MCB, sockets): €127.

For larger projects, attach a materials schedule as a PDF to avoid cramming 20 line items into the invoice body.
